Stacks of dishes, colorful market stalls and a bowl of chicken soup made this a morning with plenty to explore. I started at Hoehyeon Station on Line 4 and spent the day around Namdaemun Market.

I visited on my own on 28 September 2026. My route took me through the market’s tableware stalls and streets, then on to hotteok, chicken soup, and an iced coffee. There was plenty to look at before I sat down for a meal.

Follow my route below, from my first market stop to the time I headed home.

I spent ₩16,000 on food and coffee. Transport and shopping are not included.

My outing took about 4 hours and 30 minutes. I started at 09:30, reached the café at 11:40, and headed home around 14:00. That includes my time at the café, but not the journey home.

Opening details checked on 7 October 2026. Holiday hours and temporary closures can differ from the regular schedule.

  1. Start

    Start at Hoehyeon Station

I started my outing at Hoehyeon Station at 09:30, then walked toward Namdaemun Market.

  2. Arrived

    Browse the tableware stalls

I arrived at Namdaemun Market at 09:35 and started by looking through the tableware stalls. Shelves were packed with bowls, plates and glassware, with cutlery laid out in rows and patterned plates propped up for display. Even at that hour, people were already shopping for dishes. For me, the sheer variety was the reason to spend time here, even without a particular item to buy.

Tableware stalls were my first stop.

From there, I continued through the market streets. Outside the tableware section, colorful accessories and small souvenirs filled the stalls: keychains, hair clips and little plush toys were among the things I passed. Moving between the indoor displays and the street stalls kept the walk interesting. If you enjoy browsing, leave yourself time to look around before the food stops.

  3. Arrived

Pick up a hotteok at Namdaemun Myeongmul Hotteok

I arrived at Namdaemun Myeongmul Hotteok at 10:30 and picked up a honey-and-seed hotteok for ₩2,500. Hotteok is a filled Korean pancake; this one was my sweet snack between browsing and lunch.

It was one of my favorite bites of the morning. I didn’t have to queue when I visited on a weekday.

Give it a moment before taking a big bite: the sweet filling can be very hot when it’s freshly made. I carried on walking through the market with mine.

  4. Arrived

Sit down for chicken soup at Dakjinmi Gangwonjip

I arrived at Dakjinmi Gangwonjip at 10:50 and ordered dakgomtang for ₩10,000.

Opening details: Mon–Sat 08:00–20:30. Closed Sunday. Check latest details

Getting to the restaurant was part of the fun. I followed a narrow passage off the market streets before sitting down to eat.

My bowl had chicken and sliced spring onion in a pale broth, with rice and side dishes alongside it. I found the broth refreshing, although the chicken was a little chewy. The other customers seemed like regulars to me, which added to the feeling of an established neighborhood restaurant. The narrow approach and the older dining room were part of the experience, rather than just somewhere to eat.

  5. Arrived

Finish with coffee at Bokidang Café

I arrived at Bokidang Café at 11:40 and ordered an iced Americano for ₩3,500. It gave me a place to sit after the market walk and meal.

Seating and counter inside Bokidang café
I finished with a coffee stop at Bokidang.

The café had a bright, simple interior with pale walls, wooden tables and a bakery counter. At ₩3,500, the iced Americano was an inexpensive way to sit down after lunch. I was too full to try the salt bread, so I just had coffee.

The setting was clean and pleasant, but being farther from the main market streets was both an advantage and a drawback for me. It felt tucked away, almost like somewhere you would find only if you already knew it. I liked the space, but it also felt removed from the market atmosphere I had come to explore. If you still have room after lunch, you could look at the bakery selection.

    Head home

I headed home around 14:00. With the café stop included, I’d spent about four and a half hours on this outing.

My take

3.5 / 5

Plenty to explore, though next time I’d finish at a café closer to the heart of Namdaemun Market.

Having so much to look at was the best part for me. Bokidang was clean and pleasant, but it felt a little too removed from the market’s main streets for this particular outing. If I go again, I’ll look for a café in the heart of the market.

Would I recommend this route? For the market browsing, yes — but I’d change the café stop next time.

I went on a weekday morning. Based on the hours listed above, the full route works as a weekday plan: Bokidang closes on weekends, and the hotteok and soup stops close on Sundays. For a weekend version, choose an open café and check the food stops before setting off.
