A Date from Samgakji Station: Chicken Stew and Korean History
A Samgakji Station date with chicken stew at Solmoe, the free War Memorial of Korea and coffee. My honest café verdict, costs, times and route map.

A good lunch, a free museum and coffee afterward sounded like an easy date around Samgakji Station. The lunch and museum worked beautifully together. The café was the part I’d change.
On 22 August 2026, I went with my girlfriend to Solmoe for chicken stew, looked around the War Memorial of Korea, and stopped at Fjord when the rain pushed us indoors. This is a route I’d recommend for the food and history, with an honest reservation about my final stop.
The route at a glance
Samgakji Station → Solmoe → War Memorial of Korea → Fjord
We started at 11:40 and headed home at 15:12: 3 hours 32 min. We spent ₩36,000 for two on lunch, two coffees and a brownie. The permanent museum visit was free; subway fares and shopping are outside this total.
The times below are my arrival times, not estimates of how long each walk takes.
- Start
Start at Samgakji Station
I started at Samgakji Station on Line 4 at 11:40. The station also connects with Line 6, but this outing stayed around Samgakji on foot.

Samgakji connects Lines 4 and 6. I wanted a meal before the museum rather than a day packed with cafés. Solmoe gave us a proper lunch, and the memorial was the main place to spend time afterward.

Chicken stew in an earthenware pot at Solmoe
I arrived at Solmoe at 11:50. We each ordered ttukdak, chicken stew served in an individual ttukbaegi, the earthenware pot you’ll see used for hot Korean dishes. Each pot cost ₩10,000, so lunch was ₩20,000 for the two of us.
The stew had a little heat, but I found it easy to enjoy. If you’re curious about Korean chicken dishes and comfortable with some spice, this is the one I’d suggest trying here. It comes as an individual meal rather than a large pot you have to divide.

Side dishes served with our chicken-stew meals. Then it suddenly started raining as we were leaving. The owner gave us an umbrella. That small act of kindness is one of the things I remember most clearly about the day.
Hours: Mon–Thu 07:00–23:00; Fri–Sat 10:00–24:00; Sun 10:00–22:00. No regular weekly closed day, break time or last-order time is separately listed. Check Solmoe on Naver before going.

An afternoon at the War Memorial of Korea
I arrived at the War Memorial of Korea at 12:40. The permanent exhibitions are free, which makes it easy to leave time for a proper look rather than deciding whether a short visit is worth an admission ticket.
I saw a turtle-ship model, tanks and aircraft displays. The scale changes from models you can study closely to large military objects, so there’s plenty to look at even if you aren’t someone who reads every panel.

Large aircraft and military displays in the exhibition hall. For me, the reason to come is bigger than the equipment. If you live in Korea, even for a while, learning something about the wars the country has lived through helps give the place more context. Lunch and a walk through these exhibitions felt like a very good pairing.
Hours and admission: The memorial currently lists 09:30–17:40, with last admission at 17:00. Closed Mondays; when a holiday period includes Monday, the closure moves to the day after that holiday period. Permanent exhibitions are free; some hired or special exhibitions may charge separately. Coffee and a brownie at Fjord
I arrived at Fjord at 14:00. It was a quick choice because of the rain, and being close to the station made it convenient. The café was busy when we visited.
We ordered two Americanos at ₩5,500 each and a chocolate chip cookie dough brownie for ₩5,000: ₩16,000 altogether. The brownie was good, and the timber ceiling and small garden gave me plenty to notice while sitting inside.

The chocolate chip cookie dough brownie. Even so, I didn’t feel particularly welcomed by the service during our visit. That’s my experience of that afternoon, but it was enough that I left without wanting to return. I’d keep the restaurant and museum, then choose a different café.
Hours: Mon–Tue 10:00–19:00, last orders 18:30; Wed–Sun 10:00–21:30, last orders 21:00. No regular weekly closed day is listed; temporary closure notices appear on the listing. Check Fjord’s current hours.
- Heading home
Time to head home
We headed home at 15:12 after lunch, the museum and coffee.
My take
3 / 5
Solmoe and the War Memorial of Korea were a great combination: a satisfying meal followed by somewhere interesting to walk around. The café brought my overall score down to 3 / 5.
If I go again, I’ll keep the restaurant and museum and try Café Heuk instead. I haven’t visited that café yet, so it isn’t a stop on this map.
