A Rainy-Day Subway Outing in Seoul: Museum First, Park Optional

Rain does not have to cancel a few hours out. Make the museum your main stop, keep the park optional, and use our Ichon route without committing to a wet afternoon outdoors.

Quick answer

For a rainy-day subway outing in Seoul, choose one indoor place you would enjoy even if the rain never stops. At Ichon, make the National Museum of Korea your main stop and leave Yongsan Family Park as an optional extra. Plan for the walk between the station and the building: an underground connection does not make the whole outing weatherproof.

Choose the part of the day you want to keep

It is easy to plan a café, a long walk and one more neighborhood before checking the forecast. A wet day is a good reason to simplify. Pick the one stop you are genuinely looking forward to, then make the rest easy to change.

For this version, the museum is the reason to leave home. You can spend time with the exhibitions without needing good weather to rescue the day. A meal can be a separate decision, and a park walk can wait. You do not need to complete every stop on a saved route for the outing to feel worthwhile.

Check the museum, not just the station

The National Museum of Korea’s permanent exhibition halls are free; some special exhibitions charge admission. Choose which exhibition you want before treating the visit as a free activity.

Current regular hours are 09:30–17:30 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday, and 09:30–21:00 on Wednesday and Saturday. Admission ends 30 minutes before closing. An open evening gives you more flexibility, but the last admission time is a cutoff, not a good target for a relaxed visit.

Check the museum’s official visitor information for your date. It lists holiday closures and maintenance closures for the permanent and special galleries on the first Monday of March, June, September and December. An open garden does not mean the galleries are open.

Leave room for the walk after the train

Ichon Station is served by Line 4 and the Gyeongui–Jungang Line. The museum’s directions describe Exit 2 and the Museum Nadeulgil underground connection. They list the connection’s hours as 07:00–23:00, which are different from gallery hours.

Use the official subway directions alongside your map app. Keep an umbrella handy for exposed sections instead of assuming that “connected to the station” means door-to-door shelter. If you need a step-free route, check the elevator directions separately rather than following the nearest staircase.

Before boarding, save the museum’s Korean name, 국립중앙박물관, and its place listing. Give yourself enough time after arrival to find the entrance and settle in. A tight train-to-admission connection adds pressure to a day that could otherwise be slow and simple.

Use the Ichon guide, with a shorter finish

My Ichon route combines Korean history, stone-pot bibimbap and coffee before a park stop. It includes the actual visit timeline, spending and a numbered map you can download before leaving.

Use that map to understand the stops, then decide which ones suit the weather. The guide’s coffee ended beside the pond; that is an outdoor finish, so do not count it as your rainy-day shelter. If it is still wet when you leave the museum, skip the park and head back toward the station. You can keep the longer version for a clearer day.

The original timeline records one visit, rather than a promise that you will move at the same pace. Check current food-service hours separately if lunch is important to your plan. Gallery opening hours do not guarantee that a particular counter is serving.

Make the return decision before adding another stop

Save the route map and check the journey home before you set off. Once you are outside, ask one simple question: would this extra stop still appeal if the rain gets heavier? If the answer is no, leave it for another outing. A museum visit can be enough.
